Students Recommend Trees for Rocksprings Homes Community Center in Athens

Shade and food plantings for the area surrounding the Rocksprings Homes Community Center in Athens were among the suggestions made by second year BLA students in Shelley Cannady’s planting design class recently. Based on the students’ design solutions, the trees and shrubs will be planted in spring 2018 on Arbor Day.

Students presented their proposals to members of the community at the center in early October. Among the audience were: Athens-Clarke County Housing Authority Property Manager Danny Davenport and other members of staff; the ACC Community Tree Council President, Nina Wurzburger, and other members; the executive director of Keep Athens Clarke County Beautiful, Stacee Farrell; and ACC Community Forester Billy Paugh. According to Professor Cannady, Mr. Davenport and other stakeholders were inspired by the students’ designs and he hopes that someday there can be further interaction with the CED to address other issues on the property.

The ACC Community Tree Council, Keep Athens Clarke County Beautiful, and the ACC Housing Authority received a grant to plant trees and shrubs to provide shade and food sources to the Rocksprings Community; in turn this gave our CED students an opportunity to contribute to the effort by offering design options.
