About the Office of Development

Development is a term used in higher education to encompass fundraising, annual giving, and other financial initiatives of a college to maintain innovation and excellence.

The State of Georgia currently supplies less than 34 percent of the public funds required to operate UGA’s annual budget. This means that more than 66 percent of funding comes from the private sector, which is why each college unit at UGA employs a Director of Development. Development professionals work on obtaining the “means to the end,” in securing private resources through alumni, friends of the college, corporations and foundations.

On June 30, 2008, the College of Environment and Design (CED) completed the final phase of UGA’s Archway to Excellence Campaign. With a college unit goal set at $11 million, the CED raised nearly $8.7 million over a five-year campaign period. UGA’s overall goal of $500 million was successful, and although CED independently fell a bit short, we did increase endowments at the College by seven scholarships and two professorships. We have also increased program support funds, which assist specific functions or activities of the CED. A complete listing of endowments and support funds is listed here, and gifts can be made to any of them.

The next full UGA Campaign will likely be slated to begin around 2011, and the overall goal could be as high as $1 billion! In the meantime, the College of Environment and Design will undergo a strategic planning process to establish our unit’s long-term needs, objectives and expectations. Over the next two to three years, however, we anticipate concentrating our efforts on securing the following:

  • Increase graduate assistantships offered to MLA and MHP students by 20 percent
  • Obtain at least two Professorships to maintain cutting-edge teaching opportunities
  • Increase internship support and experience availability by 15 percent
  • Re-invigorate the culture of annual giving by alumni to support the directives of the Dean.

We urge our alumni, colleagues, industry partners and supporters to continue their investment in the College of Environment and Design, and sincerely thank every one of our contributors for their dedicated assistance. As a result, our CED programs receive national acclaim and recognition annually for the quality of graduates we produce, yet we cannot rest on our laurels; we must continue to be sensitive, aware, and at the same time proactive and responsive to the current trends and future needs of our related professions. Financial support from private sources is necessary to maintain a level of innovation to properly train, educate and develop our students to be the best professionals they can be in shaping and preserving our world. We hope you see the value of this effort and pledge your support each and every year.
