Professional Practice in Historic Preservation
This course introduces students to the historic preservation ‘workplace’. This year we will consider three broad questions. First, in what ways is historic preservation a ‘professional activity’ ? This will include discussion of the ethical dimensions of working within this field. Second, what are the opportunities within historic preservation ? We will consider the range of preservation participation, including non-profit, public, and private entities; and students will also have the opportunity to engage with individuals currently working in historic preservation. Third, how do I get a job ? Students will be encouraged to think about broad strategies (e.g. what aspect of preservation do I most enjoy, where do I want to live, what are my salary expectations), as well as specific tasks (e.g. cover letters and the c.v.).
