SHPO Volunteers at William Harris Homestead

The Student Historic Preservation Organization (SHPO) spent the morning of Saturday, August 27th, volunteering at the William Harris Homestead in Monroe, GA.  The 11 students were given a tour of the homestead by 2nd year student Dixie Gallups before they began work cleaning and gardening in the family cemetery.  The homestead which dates to 1825 was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982 and is still under the care of descendants of the original owners.  The site continues to be a working farm in addition to a wedding venue and field trip destination.  It is open for tours on the 1st and 3rd Saturday of the month and will be hosting a special Frontier Day Celebration on October 15th.  The students were happy to help and see preservation at work in the community.
